What are neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are a type of injectable that directly block the action of nerves that control the muscles in your face. The end result is a smoothening or reduced appearance of wrinkles. The botulinum toxin (type A) is the most common type of neuromodulator. Botox is the most popular formulation of this, but others include Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveu.
How does botulinum toxin work?
This substance is derived from a bacteria responsible for botulism, a potentially rare but fatal illness. In small doses, the botulinum toxin was found to temporarily block the transmission of nerve signals to the muscle that it was injected into. When these nerve signals can’t function, the muscle is unable to function properly and relaxes. When injected into the muscles of the face, this causes the creases caused by muscle contraction to flatten and become less apparent.
What should I expect at my appointment?
The primary purpose of your initial consultation is to determine your specific goals and to evaluate how botulinum toxin injections can improve the appearance of your face.
