Understanding Nasal & Sinus Implants

Advances in technology have given otolaryngologists many new opportunities to treat patients beyond surgery or commonly used spray medications. In particular, nasal drug-eluding stents and implants can be used in some patients to avoid surgery altogether.

Propel and Sinuva

Propel and Sinuva nasal implants are FDA approved steroid releasing devices developed by IntersectENT. The stents are placed into the nose and can provide longer lasting control of chronic rhinosinusitis. They have been particularly effective in helping limit the growth of nasal polyps in patients who have persistent or recurrent disease.

Propel implants are placed toward the end of your sinus surgery. The unique shape and design of the implant keeps the sinus cavities open during the post-operative process. Because the implant is coated with steroids that are slowly released over time, they can help reduce the formation of scarring as the sinuses heal. These steroids directly impact the surrounding tissue and therefore do not get absorbed throughout your body like oral steroids. Propel implants can sometimes be used in lieu of oral steroids post-operatively, which saves the patient from the potential complications of steroid use. Over time, the implant dissolves within the nose. Propel is safe and tolerated without any issues.

Sinuva is the newest advancement in the category of drug-eluding sinus implants. This particular formulation is distinct from Propel in that it is used help prolong the need for surgery. Sinuva is placed into your nose in areas of nasal polyp formation or excess inflation, where it will remain for months. Like Propel, Sinuva is coated with steroids that are slowly released over time into the surrounding tissues. After most of the steroid has been released from the implant, the Sinuva stent is then removed. Sinuva offers a safer, more localized steroid delivery system when compared to oral steroids. Most patients experience a reduction in their disease burden, although results will vary from person to person depending on the type and severity of their sinus disease.

Latera

For those that have obstructive nasal breathing due to structural weaknesses in the cartilage the supports the nose, Latera nasal implants are potential treatment that can be used in lieu of a functional rhinoplasty. The implant is loaded into device which is then used to “inject” the implant into the sidewalls of the outside part of your nose. The implant is a biodegradable substance that will stimulate scar formation around it, which will stiffen these areas of the nose. As result, these weakened area will no longer collapse as a response to negative pressure caused from normal breathing.latera-diagram
